Safe Physical Distancing Activities in downtown Rochester

Posted on April 21,2020

Minnesotans are at home per Governor Tim Walz's executive order to slow the spread of COVID-19. But "at home" does not need to mean "confined to your home," as the governor is encouraging people to get outdoors safely. Here are some safe physical distancing activities to enjoy in downtown Rochester.

ARTWalk

Creativity abounds in downtown Rochester. Take a scenic stroll along the ARTWalk, perfect for getting outside and practicing physical distancing. With 53 works from sculptures to murals to painted geese, what creativity will you come across? Show us by tagging us on Instagram.

Parks

Surround yourself with nature when you visit one of downtown Rochester’s parks. Each offers its own unique vibe. Central Park is serene and beautiful with a glimpse into the past (it is Rochester’s oldest park, after all). Stand in awe of the Heritage House Victorian Museum’s 1800s architecture. Make your way south to Mayo Park, a space where you can take in art or wind along the paved trail next to the Zumbro River. Go a little further and you’ll come across Soldiers Memorial Field Park. Find the Wall of Remembrance that bears the names of deceased southeastern Minnesota service members dating as far back as the Civil War.

Support Local Businesses

In-person dining or shopping at local businesses is not feasible currently. What is possible is supporting them through other means. Many downtown Rochester businesses have take-out, delivery, or curbside options for food and virtual shopping and gift cards for retail. Visit our Support Local Dining and Retail and Service Businesses pages for the most up-to-date details. Show them more love by rating them on Facebook or other review sites.

Trails

Bike. Board. Run. Skate. Walk. Whatever your mode of movement, set out for downtown Rochester’s trail system. As the days get warmer, the miles of paved paths along the downtown loop or the Soldiers Memorial Field circuit will provide instant relief from being cooped up. Just be sure to practice physical distancing while out.

Virtual Events

Digital is the way of the future, or at least the immediate future. Gather a group (separate but together) for electronic entertainment like a craft hour, at-home workouts, team trivia, or in-house music parties. Stay tuned to our calendar as more cyber events come online (pun intended).

#HeartofRochMN

Take a drive or take a walk. No matter where you wander in downtown Rochester, you're sure to see beautiful, colored paper hearts. When you find one, snap a photo, tag @DowntownRochesterMN and use #HeartofRochMN in your post and we’ll share the love from downtown Rochester.
