5 questions with Katie, the newest RDA staff member

The Rochester Downtown Alliance is excited to announce Katie Adelman as the new director of content and communications! While not originally from the area, Katie is all too familiar with Rochester. But we’ll let her tell you more in her conversation below!

Samantha: Welcome to the RDA team, Katie! Tell us a little about yourself.

Katie: Thank you, and absolutely! I’m a native of a small west-central Minnesota town. For anyone who might not be familiar with where Ortonville is, I like to tell people it’s on the bump of the western edge of the state. Although I grew up there, I spent my childhood traveling to the Rochester area to visit extended family, so Rochester is like a second hometown for me. After I graduated from high school, I attended college at Rochester Community and Technical College and then Minnesota State University, Mankato. I’ve worked mainly in the tourism industry and have a part-time gig as an on-air announcer at my hometown radio station.

Samantha: Sounds like you have a vast background. Why did you want to work at the RDA?

Katie: The RDA and its inspiring community presence have impressed me for years. When the director of content and communications position became available, I thought it fit my skillset to a T. Throughout grade school and college (OK, maybe not necessarily the 30-page term papers!) and to this day, writing has been a passion of mine. I’m thrilled to utilize my strengths as part of this great team!

Samantha: You studied at RCTC in Rochester five-plus years ago. How do you feel Rochester has changed?

Katie: Rochester has developed immensely! Driving through town, I sometimes have to do a double-take at a new building or a changed store. From the time I was here at RCTC, I think its vitality has grown. I believe Rochester is well on its way to being a city known for its placemaking in addition to its established medical recognition. Through it all, I’ve felt like Rochester has kept its welcoming, vibrant appeal, and I’m excited to be back in the area!

Samantha: Here comes a curveball question: what is your favorite season?

Katie: What if I said winter…just kidding! My favorite season is fall. I love the vivid oranges, yellows and reds of the changing leaves. And there’s something so comforting about a cup of hot, spiced apple cider and the crisp autumn air!

Samantha: With the mention of upcoming seasons, what are you most looking forward to in your new role with the RDA?

Katie: I’m most excited about inspiring others to find what makes Rochester feel like home for them while they’re here. Every community is unique, and Rochester has so much going for it! I’m also looking forward to getting further involved in the Rochester community, especially through volunteering and running 5Ks.

Samantha: Thanks so much for chatting with me today Katie! We are so excited to have you as part of our team!
