Get to Know an Ambassador: Lexi Johnson

Meet Lexi Johnson, one of our Clean and Safe Ambassadors who provides daily cleaning and hospitality services in downtown Rochester. As a new resident of Rochester and employee in downtown, Lexi shares how high school sports helped set up a positive work experience in the Clean and Safe Ambassador Program and what public space in downtown is a favorite.

Tell us about yourself or how your background compliments your role in the Clean and Safe Ambassador Program.

I am new to the Rochester area and moved here in June. Before then, I lived in Brooklyn Park. I was looking forward to getting into this job because I like getting to know downtown. I like being a part of a downtown because I wasn’t able to in Minneapolis because I was afraid of the crime rate. And it’s been nice to walk the streets of downtown Rochester, get to know the citizens, business owners, customers, and the area in general, and hopefully build a life here.

I’ve had several years of customer services, so I know how to interact with people on the street and make sure they feel safe. I’m always an open person to talk to about any concerns they have.

In high school, I loved doing sports; I had been in track for six years. I really enjoy being outside and getting exercise. That’s why I was looking forward to this job.

What type of positive impact do you feel the Clean and Safe Ambassador program will have on our downtown?

I feel like it’s been a big positive impact in picking up cigarette butts and large trash items. We have spent a lot of time in Mayo Park, where we assist those experiencing homelessness with housing needs, food assistance, or things of that nature. I’ve been stopped by a couple people when I’ve been walking my routes and they say they really like to see there are people out here who care about the city.

What do you like most about working in downtown Rochester?

I honestly enjoy the beautiful Historic 3rd Street buildings and how long these building have been here. And just helping the community when it comes to cleaning the streets and making a positive impact on the city.

What is your favorite public space in downtown Rochester?

I like Peace Plaza. I’m looking forward to seeing the space, once they finish the construction and expand onto Mayo Clinic.
