When the World Shows a Wound, Poetry Shows a Light

Just as Southeastern Minnesota Poets began Bright Light poetry events in the dark COVID winter to gather expressions of hope and clarity, we are now working to honor the lives of Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti and to create space for illumination in our community in an equally somber time.

As part of this special reading, local poets and others will read work that reflects thoughts and feelings about the ICE presence in Minnesota and the terrible loss of life and security, as well as visions of hope and support that come from standing together as a community. Renee Macklin Good’s much-shared poem and a special community poem—drawn from lines submitted by people around the greater Rochester area—will also be featured. Community responses will be posted in the glass ticket window at the Historic Chateau for anyone who visits Peace Plaza in February.

The night of the event, we encourage you to bring some Tupperware filled with your best bars and cookies to share in true Minnesota potluck style. Mocktails and warm beverages will be available to purchase on-site, with proceeds going to support ACHLA.

Hosted by Samuel Hawkins II, Lisa Higgs, Susan McMillan, Nicole Nfonoyim-Hara, Jean Prokott, and Pam Sinicrope.
