Mural Grant

Art adorns outdoor space. That's the whole point of downtown Rochester's new Mural Grant, which helps encourage collaboration and creativity between business and artists to enhance the vitality of downtown.

Eligibility

Any property or business owner whose property lies within the downtown Rochester special service district (SSD) is eligible for program funding.

Use of funds

Qualifying murals may be produced using a range of materials but must be larger than two feet in length and or width and placed in a publicly viewable location. The funds may be used to pay for up to 70 percent of the costs associated with renderings, artist fees, installation equipment and materials of creating a mural. Grant funds will be provided as a reimbursement to the business or property owner.

The funds will not be available to projects seeking assistance for a mural to advertise their business only, or for murals that are obviously commercial in nature.

Grant amount

Property and business owners may apply for grant assistance of up to 70 percent of the cost of improvements, not to exceed $5,000. Grant funds will be made available on a first come first serve basis.

How to apply

All applications must include a professional rendering of the proposed mural, name of the proposed mural, a statement of purpose about the proposed mural, proposed materials/medium, overview of the mural’s installation, and a biography describing previous mural commissions from the artist.

Interested artists are invited to submit their qualifications here to be considered for inclusion in a catalogue of artists.

Interested business/property owners can apply to be considered for funding via this online form.

Experienced muralists

It is required that all applicants work with an experienced muralist. Use of Minnesota-based muralists is strongly encouraged but not required. All applications must include: a professional rendering of the proposed mural, name of the proposed mural, a statement of purpose about the proposed mural, proposed materials/medium, overview of the mural’s installation, and a biography describing previous mural commissions from the artist.
