SocialICE 2018 breaks attendance records in event’s tenth year

ROCHESTER, Minn. --- February 14, 2018 --- SocialICE - Rochester Minnesota's Ice Bar – presented by the Rochester Downtown Alliance (RDA) returned to the Peace Plaza on February 8, 9, & 10 literally bigger than ever. The event saw an estimated total of 51,500 people across the three event dates making it the most attended SocialICE since its inception in 2009. This is an increase of 11,500 from 2017 in which event traffic reached 40,000. This is the first time the event has seen attendance surpass 50,000 people; the highest overall attendance recorded previously was 46,000 in 2016.

The estimated economic impact of SocialICE also saw substantial growth in 2018 reaching $1,810,907. The estimated economic impact in 2017 was $1,301,121, and $1,313,109 in 2016.

SocialICE was designed in 2009 to produce a distinctive winter event that encourages activity in Downtown Rochester. Based on 2018 survey results (as of February 13 with 485 surveys submitted), 87% of survey respondents stated attending SocialICE motivated them to seek out more activities in Downtown Rochester during the winter months. In addition, nearly 75% felt more connected to the community after attending. Finally, almost 76% view Rochester as a more innovative place after attending SocialICE.

“SocialICE 2018 confirmed that there is a strong desire to enjoy the outdoors during the winter,” says Jenna Bowman, RDA Executive Director.  “It was seen through the record setting attendance, as well as the post event survey data.  SocialICE provides residents and visitors the opportunity to collectively experience something that has been uniquely Rochester for the past decade.  Thank you to all of the participating bars and restaurants, the sponsors, and the event attendees.  We look forward to a strong 2018 events calendar and to planning for SocialICE 2019.”
