Sidewalk Sessions Music Series supports musicians and businesses

ROCHESTER, Minn.—Music is filling the streets of downtown Rochester once again as the Rochester Downtown Alliance supports musicians and downtown businesses affected by COVID-19 through the Sidewalk Sessions Music Series.

The RDA is booking local and regional musicians to perform in various downtown public spaces with Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) funding through the City of Rochester and financial assistance from Destination Medical Center.

“We know our community has missed the sounds of Thursdays Downtown, Down by the Riverside, Olmsted County Fair, Rochesterfest, and other major musical events that were cancelled because of COVID-19,” said Holly Masek, RDA executive director. “Music is a hallmark of summer in Rochester, and we’re glad to bring it back in some way for these last few beautiful months of September and October.”

For most musicians, being able to perform live has been a struggle amid COVID-19 regulations.

“I haven’t been able to put on live shows for months now. It feels good to be doing performances live again,” said Brianna Thompson, a Sidewalk Sessions performer.

The Sidewalk Sessions shows are meant to be small, casual performances that bring people downtown to safely explore in a dispersed fashion and encourage support of local businesses in the process.

“With the first couple performances, a few people who were listening to the music decided to have lunch at The Kahler Grand Grill and Martini’s patio,” said Teresa Blythe, Kahler Hospitality Services area director of sales. “Having entertainment in these public spaces will encourage people to enjoy the outside, stay awhile for lunch or get lunch to go, and listen to good music.”

The RDA encourages audience members to follow physical distancing and masking guidelines while enjoying these small, passive musical enjoyment opportunities:

Sidewalk Sessions will run through October, weather permitting.
