Rochester Downtown Alliance Kicks-off the 2nd Annual Bookworm Walk on May 21

Rochester, Minn. --- May 17, 2018 – The Rochester Downtown Alliance (RDA) is proud to kick-off the 2nd Annual Bookworm Walk Monday, May 21 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM outside the entrance to the Rochester Public Library (RPL). This free event sold out 50 children’s tickets within the first 48 hours, so tickets were increased to 75 and the event, again quickly sold out. The kick-off will feature a colorful ribbon cutting, nature-themed scavenger hunt, prizes, and a self-guided tour of the Bookworm Walk route along the river.

The Bookworm Walk program will continue the day of the kick-off event until August 31 and feature four children’s stories over the course of the summer, set in flower planters. The mapped route begins outside RPL and ends at the Rochester Riverfront Mural, across from the Government Center. This is a free program and is available for the public to enjoy along the public riverfront at any time.

The RDA created the Bookworm Walk last year as a unique opportunity for families to read together and explore other areas of Downtown. After the first season ended, we asked for the public’s input on what they enjoyed and hoped to see for the second season of the program. It was wonderful to see responses from parents and caregivers such as, “Loved it! Connected to community and connected to my children without any technology.” or “Thanks for a spontaneous stroll on a lovely day! Had not even known a waterfall was there.”

Because of comments like these, RDA has been focused on creating passive activities for both residents and visitors. Passive activities, such as the Bookworm Walk, Games on the Grass, and ArtWalk provide the opportunity for the public to explore different areas of Downtown and have a unique experience.

The RDA, our supporting partners the Rochester Public Library, the Rochester MN Moms Blog, and our Beautification Partner Lanier Parking recognize the value of supporting programming and events which inspire the public to think creatively and contribute to a more vibrant downtown community.
