ROCHESTER, Minn. - September 6, 2018 - The Rochester Downtown Alliance (RDA) is proud to announce the launch of Heads Up! Pedestrian Safety Week on Monday, September 10, 2018. Autumn is traditionally the deadliest season for pedestrians in Minnesota; the goal of this week-long program is to increase safety for pedestrians in Downtown Rochester by highlighting unsafe behaviors and increasing knowledge of current traffic laws.

Schedule of Events

  • Monday – Friday, September 10-14, 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM (daily), Intersection of 2nd St. and 1st Ave. SW: To help increase pedestrian visibility, members of the community will volunteer as crossing guards and assist pedestrians with crossing the intersection of 2nd St. and 1st Ave. SW.

  • Monday, September 10 from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM, Peace Plaza: Heads Up! will kick-off on with a press conference featuring an overview of the program, announcement of activities and events for the week.

The press conference will unveil two new prototypes; a glowing crosswalk created by Adam Salmi, owner of Maker Clinic, featured at the intersection of 1st Ave. and 3rd St. SW during Heads Up! event week, and a Pedestrian Leading Interval by Public Works at the intersection of 1st Ave. and Center St. SW.

The march will continue down the sidewalk along 2nd Street and head to Peace Plaza. Once at Peace Plaza the RDA will host a free, community picnic with Adirondack chairs for people to relax in the grassy area.

“From 2013-2017, there have been 91 reported injury crashes and 4 fatal crashes involving motor vehicles and pedestrians in Rochester, MN,” according to Sgt. Jon Turk of the Rochester Police Department. In addition to the Heads Up! schedule of events, Rochester Police will be increasing enforcement in Downtown Rochester to help educate the public and promote public safety.

The RDA, along with our supporting partners, the City of Rochester, the Rochester Police Department, and Olmsted County Public Health understand that by working together as a community, we can influence how we feel about the space and place we live.
