Downtown Rochester Mural Collaboration Incorporates Local Artists' Works
ROCHESTER, Minn.—Lines and colors are uniting in a new downtown Rochester mural in The Cove, which is a collaboration itself between the Rochester Downtown Alliance, Canvas & Chardonnay, and Café Steam.
Local artists Leah Bee of Canvas & Chardonnay and Liz Forsman are teaming up to create a mural, which will be installed October 17 in the 3rd Street Alley (behind Canvas & Chardonnay [317 Broadway Ave S] and Café Steam [315 Broadway Ave S]).
“It’s exciting to step out of a comfort zone and to create with a new artist,” said Leah Bee, co-owner of Canvas & Chardonnay. “I adore Liz’s line work. Adding my pops of colors and organic shapes alongside her details looks so dreamy; I can’t wait to see it come to life.”
The incorporation of the mural is part of a bigger conversation in downtown Rochester. When underutilized public spaces like alleys are activated and beautified, the public’s perception of safety and vitality tends to increase.
“Public art is important in spaces like The Cove,” said Bee. “Interactive art installations are welcoming and introduce people to a space they would normally glance over. Alleyways like the 3rd Street alley seem to get forgotten and sometimes get completely trashed. We want our space respected, and art is one answer.”
Started in 2018, the 3rd Street Alley Project is an initiative by the RDA in collaboration with downtown businesses. Canvas & Chardonnay and Café Steam owners were two early advocates and helped launch The Cove, in which the additions of art, lighting, and activation began this past summer.
“The Cove collaboration is a shining example of two downtown businesses working together creatively to make a space feel welcoming and safe,” said Karli McElroy, RDA senior director of placemaking.
With the installation expected to be completed the same day, the RDA is encouraging the public to explore The Cove and to enjoy its newest artistic addition after October 17.
