FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

What to expect from Improv-ICE, an adaptation of SocialICE, February 4-11

ROCHESTER, Minn.—As SocialICE improvised, Improv-ICE is a come-and-go winter experience featuring illuminated ice sculptures, a support local restaurant initiative, and more seasonal fun February 4-11 (weather permitting) in downtown Rochester.

“From Tiffany Alexandria conceptualizing the icons of Rochester into a design and Metro Ice making it come to life in ice, I am blown away by the creative ability of our local artist community,” said Monika Kopet, Rochester Downtown Alliance director of events & strategic partnerships. “I see all of us coming together to make this community experience that much more exciting and impactful, especially for our local business community. I hope we can continue that sense of involvement with all of our future events.”

Ice sculptures, Wall of ICE, and ice curtain

Peace Plaza will be illuminated with creativity and lights through the many ice artworks during Improv-ICE. Ice sculpture themes were selected by partners and will range from a clock tower to a peacock. The Wall of ICE featuring Improv-ICE partners will be back to provide a cool backdrop for photos. And the popular ice curtain will be on display during Improv-ICE February 4-11.

Buy a Meal, Give a Meal restaurant campaign

As one of the coolest attractions of SocialICE, bars and restaurants will be featured in the Buy a Meal, Give a Meal campaign. From February 4 to 11, for every transaction (dine-in check, take-out order, gift card purchase, etc.) recorded at participating downtown restaurants, a group of community supporters will donate a meal to Channel One Regional Food Bank. Find a list of participating restaurants in the Buy a Meal, Give a Meal restaurant campaign blog here.

Together Community Portrait

The Together letters on display as an art installation in 2020 will be moved to Peace Plaza for Improv-ICE February 4-11. The public is encouraged to submit their portrait, which local artists will use as a medium to create a community work of art. The public can submit photos in one of two ways:

  1. Using the form here; or
  2. Posting it to Instagram and tag @thresholdarts, @downtownrochestermn and #togetherportrait.
Improv-ICE photo contest

From February 4 through February 11, those who attend Improv-ICE and capture photos of the ice sculptures, ice curtain, or Together letters could have a chance to win one of six $25 gift cards to a downtown business in the Improv-ICE photo contest. Photos must be publicly submitted via social media using the hashtag #ImprovICE to be entered into the contest. The top photo in each category will also win a Downtown Rochester, MN branded stocking hat. Find more details on the Improv-ICE photo contest here.

Improv-ICE, an adaption of SocialICE, is February 4-11, 2021, weather permitting. More details can be found at DowntownRochesterMN.com/Improv-ICE.
