Ladies Night Out and the Love for Adventure

Posted on March 4,2016

Before I become a mother, I was a world traveller.  Part of my travel was associated with my career at the time, and the other part was simply for the love of adventure!  I loved collecting stamps in my passport and couldn't wait to discover that next quaint hole in the wall in some far off country.

Now that we have two children under two, our passports are safely tucked away for now awaiting the time when world travel will again be a reality(and it WILL be!).  For right now, we are navigating the tricky waters of diaper changes, temper tantrums and story time!

I was thrilled to hear that Rochester Downtown Alliance was planning a Ladies Night Out on March 10th from 5 pm - 9 pm where I can pick up a passport and collect stamps at participating businesses in our lovely downtown Rochester!  I can't wait for this event as it will be a small taste of finding that next "perfect spot" and a little bit of adventure right here in our own community!

Sounds like fun, right?  Here are a few more details:

1. Pick up a Passport at any of the participating store locations or the table at Shops at University Square

2. Visit and enjoy at least 5 of the listed downtown businesses and receive a stamp from each.

3.  Turn in your complete Passport at participating locations for a chance to win a $25 gift card to one of the participating businesses or the Grand Prize of a $25 gift card from all of the participating businesses!

Why not gather up a few of your best mama-friends and head off on a downtown adventure. Getting downtown is easy: parking is plentiful and free after 5 pm and all participating shops and businesses are within walking distance.

Can't wait to see you there!

Meet the Bars

Posted on February 10,2016

The first SocialICE featured one ice bar. Over the course of eight years, that number has grown to seven ice bars each with its own unique theme, hand-crafted drinks, and energetic bartenders and staff. So we thought we'd put together this handy ice bar guide, so you can easily find your way to some of your favorite bars and restaurants that will be hosting them.

Vote for Best Ice Bar

Stop by the Information Kiosk (located on the east side of the Peace Plaza) and vote for the best bar at SocialICE. The best ice bar as chosen by the crowed will take home the SocialICE Ice Bar Champions Cup traveling trophy and secure a spot in SocialICE 2017. With seven different ice bars competing for Best Ice Bar, you can bet they'll all be trying to out-do themselves from last year.

The SocialICE Insider's Guide is a four part series offering tips, tricks, contests updates, and more -- helping you navigate your way to the best-SocialICE-ever! A new issue will be released each Wednesday leading up to SocialICE, Feb 18, 19, & 20. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

Hey, Mr. DJ

Posted on January 27,2016

DJs comes in all different shapes and sizes, and at SocialICE, we will feature a different DJ each night Feb 18, 19, and 20. So what better way to kick off the SocialICE Insider's Guide than with an inside look at the three DJs that will be spinning hits, classics, and beats all night long.

Meet the DJs

DJ Gavin Boss - Thursday, Feb 18 from 5 pm - 9 pm

Born and Raised in NJ, "Right outside of NYC," DJ Gavin Boss currently lives in downtown Rochester. He's been DJing for eight years now after being inspired by popular DJ/Re-Mixers in the NJ/NY music scene like DJ BeatBreaker, DJ Antoine, Clinton Sparks, Anthem Kingz.

DJ Gavin Boss sees DJing as more than pushing buttons.

"It is bringing songs to life," he says. "Blending and mashing sounds and making people want to dance! True DJing allows you to be expressive - not sticking to a pre-determined playlist."

DJ Gavin Boss is excited to perform at SocialICE because he says it represents the true expression of the growing and evolving Rochester music and bar scene.

"It allows the great mixologists and musical talents of this city to come out and show off their skills over three nights," he says. "It's also one of the only events that allows us to take advantage of the cold weather and icy conditions!"

DJ Elsewhere - Friday, Feb 19 from 5 pm - 9:45 pm

To DJ Elsewhere, "music is life." From Minneapolis, MN, DJ Elsewhere uses his eight years of DJing experience to expose the crowd to new or obscure music by blending it with more recognizable tracks and samples. His ultimate goal: getting the entire crowd to listen and dance.

"It can be a daunting task," says DJ Elsewhere. "...but when I play a song and everyone in the crowd erupts with cheers and starts grooving even harder, I know I've made an impact, and that is what I live for."

DJ Elsewhere is a SocialICE veteran of sorts. Featured last year on Day One of SocialICE 2015, he performed outside, wrapped head to toe to face - except for his fingertips sticking out from the pair of fingerless gloves - for over two hours in close to -25 degree (F) temperatures. We had to invite him back.

"...despite it being a miserable -25 degrees, I still had a fantastic time," he says. "Themed ice bars and ice sculptures, specialty drinks, and great people. There's a special kind of community feeling in cold climates I don't think you can experience it anywhere else... SocialICE is the perfect kind of event to bring people together in the darkest, coldest part of the year."

DJ Nimo the Hooligan - Saturday, Feb 20 5 pm - 9:45 pm

Hailing from "The Islands of Aloha," DJ Nimo the Hooligan is originally from Hawaii but currently resides in Minneapolis, MN.

Going on 15 years, Nimo the Hooligan started DJing because he was interested in turntablism, hip hop, and music in general.

"I just liked the idea of making people dance, making them happy and bringing people together with music," says Nimo the Hooligan. "Now, I can say I do it for a living, which is fantastic!"

Nimo the Hooligan looks forward to SocialICE because he enjoys working new venues and meeting new people.

Social Ice Survival Guide Issue 3: Ice Bars and Staying Warm

Posted on February 11,2015

SocialICE is just as much about the ice bars as it is about the activities! So we thought we'd put together this handy ice bar guide, so you can easily find your way to some of your favorite bars and restaurants that will be hosting them. (Skyway runs North and South)

Vote for Your Favorite Ice Bar

And while you're at it, vote for your favorite theme! This year marks the beginning of the first ever SocialICE Ice Bar Champions Cup! The ice bar with the best theme as chosen by the crowed will take home the SocialICE Ice Bar Champions Cup traveling trophy. Voting will take place at the information kiosk located at the east end of the Peace Plaza (east of the 1st Ave pedestrian crossing) near the Walk of Ice ice-sculpture garden.

Tips for Staying Warm

What’s the best way to stay warm at SocialICE? Keep moving and walk your way to all 7 bars, of course! But here's a few other tips and pointers to help you stay warm during Rochester Minnesota's Ice Bar.

  1. Layering – wear several layers of clothing. This will help to create air between the layers which will insulate and help ventilate your core.
  2. AVOID COTTON - cotton binds moisture and then has a chilling effect. Wool is your best friend during a MN winter.
  3. Bigger shoes – choose footwear that is a little roomier to allow for those cozy wool socks.
  4. Wind protection – a waterproof outer shell is key to guarding against any wind when amongst downtown buildings.
  5. Top it off – A good hat and is crucial. It should protect not only your head, but your ears, and neck. Gloves come in a variety of styles, but our favorites are the kind that you can use with your smart phone. #SocialICE

First Came Kurt. Then Came the RedBall Rochester

Posted on October 29,2014

RedBall Project artist Kurt Perschke will visit Rochester to gain insight into the community that will host his world-renowned art instaliation.

ROCHESTER, Minn. --- October 29, 2014---- Kurt Perschke, sculpture, video, collage, and public space artist, will be visiting Rochester from November 2 – 9 in preparation for his traveling art project named the RedBall Project, which is set for installation fall 2015.

Perschke will use his time in Rochester to gain insight and perspective on the buildings, the spaces, and the people that make up the community.
In addition to using this time for planning the installation, the Rochester Downtown Alliance (RDA) will be holding two community meetings – Wednesday, November 5th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Söntés, and Thursday, November 6th from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the Rochester Art Center– to introduce Perschke to the community and provide details about the project.

“I am incredibly excited to welcome Kurt and the Redball Project to Rochester,” says Jenna Bowman, RDA Executive Director. “Kurt is passionate about the RedBall, but more importantly about the street dialogue that happens in the community hosting it. The Redball Project is an opportunity for the RDA to activate the river and support public art. I invite members of the community to get involved with this exciting opportunity.”

After recalling an interaction with Rochester Art Center Executive Director Shannon Fitzgerald, Perschke comments on bringing the RedBall Project to Rochester and back to the US.

“I know Shannon Fitzgerald from our time in St. Louis where the RedBall Project began,” he said. “So when she reached out to me about bringing RedBall to Rochester and doing something with her at the Art Center I was intrigued. The work can have a very [engaging] response [in] a small city, and as it hasn’t been to the States in many years I’m curious to see what my site visit discovers, there are always surprises.”

Life of an Intern - Random Acts of Awesome

Posted on July 9,2013

There is a saying that has become more and more common as the economy has tightened; it’s not what you know, its who you know.  However, I’d like to add a piece to this statement.  It’s not what you know, or who you know, but how you know who you know.  Let me explain, I truly believe that determination, dedication and hard work reap their own rewards, but not without the help of those surrounding.  Humans can be absolutely amazing and their passion, generosity and kindness leave marks on the world.  The best of this happens when people come together, united by a cause.  In the last few weeks, I have been able to witness all this and more as I acquired another internship with C4, Concerned Citizens for a Creative Community.  How am I going to tie this all in together? Well I guess you’ll just have to keep reading to find out.

First, I must rant and rave about being presented with the opportunity to intern with C4 in the first place.  To be honest, I had not even heard of C4 before my superior, Melissa Schmid, informed me that she had recommended me for an internship position they had available.  Here’s what blows my mind, a member of RDA had enough confidence in me to bet their reputation on my success or failure with this other organization.  If I ended up to be a horrible intern with C4, its not likely that they would be taking any other recommendations from RDA any time soon.

Life of an Intern - Better Late Than Never

Posted on June 26,2013

It’s a fascinating thing when one begins to grasp the vastness of how much they don’t know.  I have lived in Rochester since I was five years old, and in the last few weeks have learned more about this city than I have in the last 17 years. To provide a little background information, I just took a Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) class to better serve the community while working for RDA.  Ok, full disclosure: growing up, I gave-in to the perception that, “There is nothing to do in Rochester”.  WRONG.  If you are ever bored in this city, it is your own darn fault.  Rochester offers way more than any other town of 100,000 (approx.) would be able or willing to provide, and so much of it is just minutes away from downtown!

Don’t believe me? Challenge accepted.

Let’s start off on a classy note with some expression of the arts.  The Rochester Arts Center provides a variety of world-class exhibits throughout the year providing opportunities for volunteers, interns and artists to get involved or get exposure.  With no private collection, the Rochester Arts Center is able to best utilize their space and bring in multiple exhibits throughout the year for an ever-changing visual experience.  Not only is Rochester rich in visual arts, but also performing arts.  The Rochester Civic Theater offers opportunities for the community to experience the art of acting through classes and performances, as well as various professional, dance and musical acts throughout the year.

Life of an Intern - The First of First and 3rd

Posted on June 12,2013

Last week was the first official Thursdays on First and 3rd and my first official experience working behind the scenes of this enormous event.  Although the festival doesn’t start until 11am, our day began at 6:30am, an hour I haven’t had to pay attention to for a long time…

As I was walking up to the Peace Plaza to meet the other Rochester Downtown Alliance staff members at the information kiosk, I can remember three key emotions overwhelming me; anxiety, terror and excitement.  Anxiety because I had never done most of the tasks I had been assigned, and I didn’t want to mess up royally on the first go around.  Terror because I knew I would be without the aid and advice of the RDA staff for a majority of the morning load-in process.  Lastly, excitement because despite the fear and nerves, I knew this was exactly where I wanted to be.

Growing up, I was never the girl who had her wedding day all planned out by age 10, nor was I ever on the prom committee, or even fundraising for student counsel, but somehow I often found myself organizing and coordinating nonetheless.  Although I always enjoyed bringing people together through events and activities, I never thought of it as a career option.  College, thankfully, changed that.  After a year of attempting to convince myself that clinical lab science was my calling, I finally dropped that illusion once intro to chemistry kicked my butt… for the second time.  I quickly switched to Communications and never looked back.

Life of an Intern - Gearing Up

Posted on June 5,2013

Hello, my name is Raquel Grad and I am the RDA intern for the summer of 2013.  I have had some interaction with RDA events over the past year, but I am excited to begin learning what happens behind the curtain.  I have been coming to the offices of RDA now for almost 3 weeks and already I have learned and experienced so much.  What I find most fascinating so far is how hands-on the staff is with every event they host and assist with.  All the staff members I work with have gone out on several occasions to walk events spaces, monitor events and gather necessary supplies for events.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a weekend, during office hours or late in the evening, the staff is dedicated to making sure things run smooth.

It’s no surprise that event planning is a hands-on occupation, but the dedication of the RDA members goes above and beyond expectations.  One of my first personal experiences with this happened on Friday, May 31st.  Beginning at 8am, RDA staff and volunteers began work on stuffing 5,000 bags to hand out during Thursdays on First and 3rd.  The morning began with transporting box after box of sponsor materials from the basement storage room to an offsite location, then, of course, unloading them all in our work space.  All of this was done exclusively by staff personnel.  Then the real fun began.  After staff finished setting up four assembly lines, the volunteers began showing up for their assigned shifts and things really got rolling.  Staff and volunteers walked back and forth, stuffing bags, dropping them off and beginning again in an efficient, flowing loop.

Thursdays on first & 3rd Summer Music Festival

Posted on April 19,2013

Calling all music lovers – get ready for an amazing summer!  I am happy to announce that the 2013 Thursdays on first & 3rd Music Festival lineup is better than ever thanks to a newly formed partnership with the City of Rochester Music Dept./Riverside Concerts.  This year’s festival will present a total of 48 bands every Thursday from June 6th through August 29th (note: no festival scheduled for July 4th; check out the fun at Silver Lake instead that day).  Afternoon bands perform from 4:00-5:15pm, and evening bands play from 6:30-8:30pm.  All performances are free to attend!

What I personally love most about Thursdays on first & 3rd is watching the people, especially the kids, enjoy the music.  I get a big smile on my face when I see people get up and dance to the music or clap their hands to the beat.  No matter how different we all are, music has the amazing power to bring us together in harmony to celebrate the beauty of life.  The festival also presents a wonderful opportunity to celebrate diversity through so many different genres of music, some of which I’ve never even heard of before – like “Pork Neck Boogie” or “Noir Pop/Retro”.  The overall vision of the festival is to offer a wide variety of genres to a wide variety of people.  By doing so, the festival becomes a sense of place where people can connect in a quality of life experience.
