RDA, DMC EDA, RAC announce next steps for PlaceMakers | Rochester Prototyping Festival

Rochester, Minn. – June 30, 2016 – Together Rochester Downtown Alliance (RDA), Destination Medical Center Economic Development Agency (DMC EDA), and the Rochester Art Center are pleased to announce next steps for PlaceMakers | Rochester Prototyping Festival.

More than 20 groups submitted prototype proposals around the theme of Health and the Built Environment.  Prototypes will be on public display at the September 15-17, 2016 Rochester Prototyping Festival. Proposed project ideas included innovative approaches to stormwater treatment, light displays to communicate community health, artist-designed bike lanes, a healing garden, and interactive musical instruments made out of PVC pipes (a complete listed and brief description of all submittals is attached.

The public will have an opportunity to select their favorite from the submitted proposals on Thursday, June 30 at Thursdays on First & 3rd between 11:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Historic 3rd Street. There will be also activities at the 3rd Street location to allow members of the community to increase their awareness of and engagement with the prototyping concept.

The following Thursday, July 7, the selected 2016 PlaceMakers projects will be announced at Thursdays on First & 3rd on the 1st Avenue Stage at 12:15 p.m.

Finally, there will be a special opportunity to meet the prototyping teams for the 2016 PlaceMakers | Rochester Prototyping Festival at Pitch Night on Tuesday, July 19 from 7-9 p.m. at the Rochester Art Center. In this fast-paced “pitch style” program, attendees can learn more about the inspiration behind each prototype and its interpretation of Health and the Built Environment. Attendees can also engage directly with the makers about their projects. Beverages will be available.

Prototyping is a way of studying the impact of a project or methodology before investing in the generally high cost of final design and installation.  This business strategy used in other industries and is now being applied to the urban environment to test out new and creative solutions to city building challenges.
